First What Does FTP Mean?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.

Why Do I Need FTP?

FTP is used for transferring website pages or other files uploaded onto your web host from your computer. An FTP program is an Internet tool / piece of software which allows you to transfer files between your computer and another server - this is typically the server that your website is hosted on.

This is very similar to transferring files on your computer to one folder from another, apart from your transferring from your computer to the computer of your web host, to do this you need some special software. At HowToWebsite we use an FTP program.

Most commonly there will be a folder called “public_html” - Double click on this folder to open it, inside this folder you will find files such as ‘index.html’ cgi-bin etc, this is the folder that you need to upload your website files (from your computer) to. After ensuring you are in the correct directories on both your computer and server. Click on one of your files on the left hand side and hold down “CTRL” (on your keyboard and press ‘A‘ (on your keyboard), alternatively highlight all of the files - either way you should ensure that all files within your website root folder have been highlighted as shown below  : -

16. Finally, right click all of the highlighted files and select ‘Upload‘ and simply wait for your file to transfer from your computer to your web server.

You will notice a succession of the following message, this means that each file has uploaded to your website server : -

You may want to open your website in a web browser to ensure the transfer process has been successful.
